Is Your Patio Door Energy-Efficient?

May 21, 2020 | doors

Your exterior remodeling and roofing contractors will likely refer to certain performance standards to measure the energy efficiency of a patio door. Patio doors and replacement windows are rated using similar standards with only a few differences. Understanding these standards can go a long way in helping you find a door that will improve the overall efficiency of your home.

Doors and windows account for almost 30% of heat losses in an average American house. Because of its impact, it’s important to use good judgment whenever you’re in the market for a replacement. This is easier said than done, however, as many homeowners can often get lost in all the technical jargon. Here are a few tips from our experts at Turner Home Improvement on how to find energy efficient patio doors for your home.

ENERGY STAR®-Certified Doors

The Department of Energy has made shopping for “green” home improvement products such as patio doors, roofing, siding, and windows easier with the ENERGY STAR® program. ENERGY STAR rates different products based on how well they can help you save on your energy bills and awards these same products with a sticker of a green star, an indication that it is indeed a good choice.

Performance Ratings

To qualify for an ENERGY STAR certification, patio door manufacturers must meet certain criteria as laid out by the NFRC or the National Fenestration Rating Council.

  1. SHGC stands for solar heat gain coefficient. It measures just how much heat your interiors will gain through the door. This is often an issue in doors with glass panels and rarely in solid and opaque ones.
  2. U-Values and R-values are both measurements used in how much heat a patio door or a replacement window will transmit through its glass components as well as its frame components.
  3. Glazing level is a factor that’s unique to doors as it measures how much of the door’s total area is made with glass components.
