Refinishing Old Flakey Decks

Jun 21, 2019 | Home Improvement

Given enough time, the most durable roofing material will eventually need a roofing contractor, the most energy-efficient window will need a replacement and the strongest siding boards will begin to show signs of wear and tear. The same is true with your deck. While there are ways to protect and prolong the life span of an outdoor deck, eventually, its coat will begin to strip and flake, leaving behind a mottled wooden surface that looks the worse for wear.

Refinishing Old Flakey Decks

Let our home improvement specialists at Turner Home Improvement Contractors, LLC walk you through some steps to help you make your deck look brand-new again.

Stain Removal

Unlike the installation of a replacement window, refinishing a deck is not a particularly complicated process. You don’t necessarily need professionals to come and re-apply a new color for your deck. All you’ll need are a few basic tools and materials, and a little bit of elbow grease.

  • Stiff brush

  • Stripping discs

  • Knee pads

  • Safety glasses

  • Gloves

  • Dust mask

  • Deck stain remover

  • Deck conditioner

  • Wood stain or any preferred finish

Refinishing the Deck

Apply the deck stain remover vigorously to all visible surfaces on your deck. The solution takes time to fully soften the old finish. After about an hour, use a stiff brush to scrape away the flaked up wood stains. This is, by far, the most vigorous step of the entire process.

Rinse the deck with water and make sure it’s completely clean and dry before applying a fresh new coat of wood stain, paint, or whatever finish you prefer.
