Do you know what type of shingles are on your roof?
There are three main types of asphalt shingles we typically see here in Connecticut.
- Three-tab shingles
- Architectural shingles
- Designer shingles
Three-tab shingles were the popular shingle around the 80s, but their poor resistance to the wind made them an unideal candidate. At this point, we only see three-tab shingles being used for repairing existing three-tab shingled roofs. Even the newer three-tab shingles are not used for full roof replacement in Connecticut due to their low wind rating of 70mph. Connecticut towns require a wind rating of 100mph or higher, so these roofs would be flagged during a building inspection. As you can see by the picture below, three-tab shingles are very flat. It is this flat design that aids in making them weaker and overall, less resistant to the elements over time.
Architectural shingles are the most popular shingles used nationwide. The multi-dimensional look is not only aesthetically appealing but functional too. These shingles are stronger and last longer offering a lifetime warranty and in the case of the GAF Timberline HDZ shingles, have an unlimited wind warranty.
Designer shingles have all the strength and technology of architectural shingles but create more of a statement. They often are used as an alternative to replicate the look of natural slate or cedar shingles. Often, they are used on historic homes or as an accent feature to enhance the overall look of a home.
